Mother Tongue Other Tongue is a regional poetry competition whose aim is to celebrate languages, culture and language learning by giving secondary school students the opportunity to practise and improve their foreign language skills, and appreciate their heritage, using poetry.

Winning students from the West Midlands are invited to the National Celebration Event at Manchester Metropolitan University, where they receive their prize from a guest speaker.

Students from different year groups have the opportunity to go Aston university and take part in cultural days throughout the year. They feature native speakers from countries studied by the students who deliver language and culture workshops to small groups of pupils.

In 2019 we started a French trip where French GCSE and A Level students had the opportunity to go a 3-course lunch at a French restaurant. As soon as we arrived we were set in France, with the décor, the music and the props.

The aim was to give students a taste of being in a French restaurant. As well as ordering all of their food in French, from a French menu, students had to use their knowledge of the language to sort out problems during the meal, give detailed opinions about their food and discuss healthy eating issues. The students had to use their French in an unscripted way to develop their coping mechanisms which are relevant in exam situations.

This is something that we intend to do yearly.

Chase Grammar School is proud to offer a letter exchange programme to students who study French from Year 7. We exchange letter with Eugène Thomas school complex in France. Pupils write in both French and English and are always very excited about receiving letters back.
