Hannah, Year 13
I was welcomed into Chase 18 months ago when I needed a change of school due to difficult circumstances. I had hit a crossroads with my education but as soon as I came to Chase, everything turned around dramatically. All the teachers are incredibly supportive and are always doing everything possible to be as inclusive as they can. I would not be the person I am today if I had never been given the encouragement and the belief in my abilities regardless of my disabilities. The number of opportunities that were offered to me were amazing. I was allowed to participate in Games lessons, this doesn’t seem like a big deal but I was never allowed to participate at previous schools. The teachers adapted straight away and never saw my wheelchair as a barrier to being included. They all supported me in my sports that I do outside of school including, wheelchair racing, disability acrobatic gymnastics and archery. I was even lucky enough to be able to represent Chase at the Schools National Finals for acrobatic gymnastics and winning gold.
I have had a very difficult time throughout my education, but Chase was different, I knew as soon as I came through the gates that this was the place for me.
I have learnt so much and never been doubted in my abilities. I studied A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths. I’m not going to lie; it was hard and challenging at times but the support I received from all my teachers was incredible. They were always there when I needed that little bit of extra support in my studies and if I was having a tough day, there was always someone to talk to and work things out. There were many occasions that I just wanted to give up, but the teachers never gave up on me. Everyone was amazing throughout my A-Levels, always motivating and believing in me and making me believe in myself and my own abilities.
The UCAS team are superb in what they do. They supported me through every step of the way, from choosing which courses/universities to look at, to writing my personal statement and then preparing for interviews. I was fortunate enough to be offered a place at my top choice university to study Dietetics which has always been a huge passion of mine. However, I have decided that a Dietetic apprenticeship is the right way to go for me. Again, the UCAS team supported me through this as well, and never discouraged me for following this route.
I have achieved some really great things throughout the past 18 months. The main achievement for me is that my confidence and belief in myself has dramatically improved. Chase has really helped me come out of my shell, if you asked me 18 months ago or even just 6 months ago, then I never would have believed that I would sit my A-Levels and achieve the best grades for myself. Chase is like a family to me, and I have always felt included and most importantly accepted. That is the greatest thing about Chase is that they accept you for who you are regardless of your background.
If you believe in yourself then you can achieve anything.
